This one calls for a little story time....

Before the pandemic, I was rushing around like a crazy woman taking my kids to all their activities. I think we were doing baseball, soccer, judo, ballet, swimming and gymnastics...and they were only 5 and 6 years old!

So when the pandemic hit and we were all forced to stay home and hit the pause button, it was a very welcome break from all the chaos. Not to mention the kids got to experience a more simple life like I had growing up...riding bike around the neighborhood, playing outside, going to the beach, growing a garden...they were just enjoying being kids! It was then that I promised myself that I wouldn't go back to such a crazy chaotic schedule ever again.

Fast forward to now....I need to hide my face in shame. :( My kids are in baseball, basketball, tennis, art, and kempo...and I'm back to shuffling them back and forth everyday. oops!

It's so easy to get caught up in the chaos of daily life. As the kids get older, their sports and extracurricular activities take up so much more time. But that's when we need to stop ourselves and remember to "enjoy every sandwich". This quote is from the late musician Warren Zevon, who was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer and was given one year of life to live.

In a "Late Show" appearance in 2022, David Letterman asked Zevon if his approach to life and music had changed since he was diagnosed with terminal cancer. He told Letterman "...you put more value on every minute you do live...it's more valuable now. You're reminded to enjoy every sandwich and every minute..."

Never take even the simplest things for granted...being able to walk, breathe freely and feel the sun on your skin...those are things my dad couldn't do on this own. He was in a wheelchair for over 20 years, had 24/7 oxygen for 15 years, and the last 1-1/2 years of his life he was completely bed-bound. So if you can get out of bed, take a deep breath, walk outside and hug your kids, you already have lots to be grateful for.

I also think of this quote literally when Mia makes us one of her 'famous' peanut butter nutella sandwiches for breakfast. It might seem like just a plain ole messy sticky sandwich, and most times I don't even feel like eating it, but then I think of Ian and I know he would give ANYTHING to still be here and enjoy one of her sandwiches.

So no matter how ordinary and mundane something might seem, savor every moment and every opportunity. Don't let the chaos of every day rob you of these small moments. Sometimes it's the small things that mean the most in the end. Tomorrow is not promised for any of us. Appreciate every minute and enjoy every sandwich.

(This design was hand written by Brody and Mia so that I could capture this point in time.)

Tote bag measures 20" wide and 17" tall with a 7" bottom gusset and it's made of a 12oz cotton canvas.
